Prime Video’s new racing documentary, American Thunder: NASCAR to Le Mans, is set to hit Prime Video on June 12. The film tells the exciting story of NASCAR’s bold entry into the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans race during its 100th anniversary in 2023. This exclusive feature-length documentary will be available to stream globally for all Prime members in over 240 countries and territories.
Le Mans is one of the toughest and most prestigious races in the world. It’s a 24-hour endurance test that pushes both drivers and cars to their limits. In 2023, NASCAR accepted a rare invitation to bring an American Chevrolet Camaro stock car to compete against high-tech racing machines from brands like Ferrari and Porsche.
This dream became reality thanks to NASCAR Chairman and CEO Jim France, who had long imagined a stock car competing in Le Mans. To make it happen, he teamed up with Hendrick Motorsports, the most successful team in NASCAR history.
Star-Studded Team, Intense Preparation
The documentary follows an intense 18-month journey to prepare the car for the challenge. NASCAR drivers Jimmie Johnson, Jenson Button, and Mike Rockenfeller were chosen to lead the charge. Together with Hendrick Motorsports, they had to transform a car built for short oval races into one that could survive a full day on a winding, demanding road course.
Behind the Scenes of a Racing Milestone
American Thunder: NASCAR to Le Mans gives viewers a behind-the-scenes look at this one-of-a-kind racing moment. From early planning to the checkered flag in France, the film captures the passion, effort, and teamwork behind the project.
The documentary is produced by NASCAR Studios and Griffin Van Malssen, with Brad Lockhart directing. Executive producers include Jeff Gordon from Hendrick Motorsports and Tim Clark, John Dahl, Amy Anderson, Tally Hair, and Matt Summers from NASCAR.
