What is Pineapple Express about?

The movie follows Dale Denton (Seth Rogen), a process server who enjoys his downtime with a joint in hand. His laid-back routine takes a dark turn when he witnesses a murder committed by a corrupt cop (Rosie Perez) and a local drug lord (Gary Cole).

Panicked, Dale turns to his equally high-strung dealer Saul Silver (James Franco) for help. But things spiral out of control fast when they realize the rare strain of weed Dale dropped at the scene, Pineapple Express, could be traced right back to them.

What follows is a fast-paced and ridiculous run-for-your-life journey filled with explosions, betrayals, shootouts, and the kind of hilarious banter that made this film a cult favorite.

A stacked cast that delivers nonstop laughs

Seth Rogen and James Franco are the heart of this film. Rogen brings his usual lovable, sarcastic energy, while Franco shines in one of his funniest roles as the overly chill, surprisingly resourceful Saul. The chemistry between them is electric and totally believable, making the chaos they stumble into even more entertaining.

They’re joined by a solid supporting cast, including Danny McBride in a scene-stealing role as Red, their unpredictable ally. Craig Robinson, Kevin Corrigan, and Nora Dunn also add to the chaos with performances that keep the laughs coming.

Amber Heard, Gary Cole, and Rosie Perez round out the cast with solid turns that balance out the humor with just enough danger to keep the stakes real.

Still a high-flying ride worth watching

While Prime Video’s top 10 is often filled with forgettable action flicks and bland thrillers, Pineapple Express is a fun throwback that holds up surprisingly well. It’s not just a stoner movie, it’s a buddy action film with heart, packed with absurd moments and genuine laughs.

It may not win over everyone with its mix of slapstick and violence, but if you’re in the mood for an outrageous, action-packed comedy, this one’s worth the rewatch.

On Rotten Tomatoes, Pineapple Express holds a 68% critic score and an audience rating of 73%, showing that it’s found a solid fan base over time. The critics’ consensus calls it “a hit-and-miss effort” but praises the performances and action sequences.

Honestly, that’s fair, it’s not perfect, but it’s a blast.

With so many generic options floating around Prime Video right now, Pineapple Express is a rare gem that’s actually worth clicking play on. If you missed it the first time, or just want to revisit it for the laughs, now’s the perfect time to stream Pineapple Express on Prime Video.
